Virginia M. Anders passed away at hospice at CAMC Memorial on 12/30/23. She was preceded in death by her parents B. H. “Slim” and Minnie Brown Metheney; Hilda Fitzwater and Jennings Zirkle. She was married to Laird C. Hunley for forty-one years and together they had two sons. She later married H. F. Anders. His death came in 2007. Other family members who preceded Virginia; Sisters: Barbara and Omri Ingram, Helen and John Fraizer, Bettie Johnson-Goehring, Jean and Mike Yurich, Lorene and George Swyers, Janice Metheney and Thelia Miller. Brothers: D. H. Brown, Hansel Brown and Benjamin H. “Jack” Metheney (Kathryn) of Roanoke, VA.
Virginia was a graduate of Montgomery H. S., class of 1947. She was a member of Riverview (formerly Glen Ferris) UMC, where she served as Secretary-Treasurer for many years. Virginia was employed as a secretary in the engineering department of EMCO, Alloy for several years before she later retired from the Fayette County BOE, where she worked with school health service. In addition to caring for her family, church and employment, Virginia was interested in community service and found an outlet for this in the local Women’s Club. Later, she worked with others to organize a volunteer ambulance service where she herself served for the next twenty-five years.
Survivors include her sons, Robert Benjamin Hunley (Kathryn) of Ventura, CA; James David Hunley of Glen Ferris; daughter Linda Anders-Pearson (George) of Grand Rapids, MI; three grandchildren, Mark Hunley (Rachel) of Springdale, AR, George F. Pearson (Linda) and Heather Riley (Kevin), both of MI. Great grand-children Ella Hunley, Megan and Shaun Riley; Sisters-in-Law Margarette Brown and L. Brown; Brothers-in-Law Henry Georhing, and Frank Miller.
Service will be held at a later date.
