Michael McComas Obituary

Michael “Mike” Herbert McComas, 72, of Jodie, West Virginia, joined the Lord on April 9, 2024, at CAMC Memorial Hospital, surrounded by loved ones. He was a Christian, a devoted husband and father, and an avid sports fan, especially the Mountaineers. He was well-known for his love of Frosties, Reese’s Cups, and snack cakes, and he never left home without a coffee in his hand.

Mike was born in Hinton, WV on July 1, 1951, to Bobby and Wilma McComas. He graduated from Collins High School in Oak Hill, WV, and earned an associate degree in general studies from West Virginia Institute of Technology in Montgomery, WV. He was a former member of the Army National Guard, where he served as a military police officer and cook. He spent most of his career with Bethlehem Mines in Drennen, WV, where he was an engineer and surveyor for 16 years, and earned his CB handle, “Surveyor.” Mike made Jodie his home, where he served 16 years as a fireman and EMT with the Gauley River Volunteer Fire Department, was a longtime member of the Jodie Environmental Committee, and he brought his daughters up in church at Jodie Baptist Church.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, his sweetheart, Sylvia Lynn (Taylor) McComas, whom he loved very much, and treated like a princess. He is also survived by his daughters, whom he tucked into bed each night and said bedtime prayers and “twinkled” their noses, Lynn Huddleston, of Scott Depot, WV, and her husband Jason and their daughter Katie, Susan McComas, of Dunbar, and her fiancé Matt Anderson and daughter Tatum Richardson, and his son, Zachary McComas, of Jodie, WV, and his daughter Willow. Mike loved his children endlessly, always participating in school events and the PTA, always helping with homework, and traveling to sporting events, and was very proud of each of them. He adored his grandchildren, Katie and Tatum, and great-granddaughter, Willow, and he especially enjoyed teasing them to get a smile or a laugh. Mike also loved his family pets, and will be missed sorely by his miniature schnauzer, Princess.

In addition to Mike’s immediate family, he is survived by his baby sister, Cindy Toney, of Beckley, WV, and her husband Roger and children Cameron and Cierra, brother Austin McComas, of Hico, WV, and his wife Linda and daughters Candace, Amber, and Savannah, and brother Bobby McComas, of Oak Hill, WV, and his wife Ruth and son Aaron. He is also survived by brother-in-law, Sonny Taylor, of Indore, WV, and his wife Marietta and children Craig, Andrea, and Sam, brother-in-law Junior Taylor, of Hagerstown, MD, and his wife Fran and children Bessie and Christopher, nephew Gerald Carter, of Orangeburg, SC, and his wife Pam, niece Beth Marley of Wilmington, NC, niece Lynn Rose of Orangeburg, SC, and husband Michael, and nephew Trey Carter, of Orangeburg, SC, and wife Denise.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Bobby and Wilma McComas, his brother, Roger McComas and Roger’s wife Panella, infant brother Randall and infant sister Linda, his parents-in-law, Walter and Reva Taylor, who loved him like a son, sister-in-law Hildreth “Sister” Carter and husband Woody Carter, and sister-in-law April Taylor.

Mike will always be remembered for his kind heart, warm smile, and friendly blue eyes. No one could find a better man or have asked for a better husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, or friend. He will be missed every day, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.
