Dominick Costa of Falls View passed from his earthly home on January 6, 2012.
He was born in Calatria Prov. Reggio Calabria, Italy on October 17, 1919, the youngest of four sons of Luigi and Rosa Manno Costa.
Dominick joined his father at a small mining community in Greenbrier County at age 17. He was self-educated in the English language as well as life-long work in mining.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the military police branch of the U.S. Army. He served honorably as an interpreter as well. After his military service ended, he returned to the mining industry and later owned and operated coal mines in Boone, Fayette, Greenbrier and Kanawha counties.
Dominick was given the gift of many years and had a passion for life, enjoying his family, work and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents; brothers Cosimo, Jimmy and Joe; and a daughter, Sondra.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Wanda Lee Snodgrass; his son, Frank Lee Costa and wife, Jennifer of Morgantown; grandchildren, Francesca Lynn Costa of Surfside Beach, SC, Nikki Lee Costa of Morgantown and Chase Costa and wife, Amnee of Gauley Bridge, and their son, Dominick, named in honor of his great-grandfather.
Additional survivors include grandsons, Bryan Walkup of Lake Norman, NC, Steven Walkup of Greenbrier County; granddaughters, Sherri Costa of Conway, SC and Susan Wriston of Deltona, FL along with six great-grandchildren.
Dominick also cherished the love of his brother Joe's children, Rita, Kay and Bob as well his brother Cosimo's children residing in New Jersey.
Dominick was a 40-plus year member of the Falls View Presbyterian Church, a 75-year member of the United Mine Workers of America, a member of the Masonic Bodies Gauley Bridge Lodge No. 64, Scottish Rite, York Rite and Beni Kedem Shrine. He spent many years enjoying golf at Hawks Nest Golf Club. He and his wife were also members of Kanawha Chapter No. 38, Order of Eastern Star.
There will be a visitation at Pennington Funeral Home in Gauley Bridge from 6 to 8 pm on Saturday, January 7, 2012. The celebration of Dominick's life will begin at 2:00 pm Sunday, January 8, 2012 at the Falls View Presbyterian Church. The service will be officiated by the Reverend Joan Stewart and Elder Kari Preslar. Masonic rites will follow at Montgomery Memorial Park in London.
Immediately following the entombment, a reception will be held at the church. In lieu of floral memorials, contributions may be directed to the Children's Home Society of WV in Dominick's memory at PO Box 2942, Charleston, WV 25330 - Attn: Mary White.
