Cora Bird Obituary

Cora Sue Bird, 83, of Jodie, passed away quietly at home, surrounded by loved ones, on Friday, September 29, 2017.

She was born May 4, 1934, in Mount Lookout, she was the daughter of the late Leslie McClung, Sr. and Mary Chapman McClung. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by brothers, Leslie “Bubbo” McClung, Jr., Leo Dale McClung, Charles Edward McClung, James Nelson McClung; sisters, Etta Virginia Thomas, Lucille McClung, Audra May Skaggs, and JoAnn Thomas; grandson, Cory Randolph Sergent.

Cora is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Kenneth Adrian Bird; sons and their wives, Wayne Ray Sergent (Bonnie) of Pinellas Park, FL., Kevin Lee Bird (Gail) of Jacksonville, FL., Kerry Lane Bird (Lisa) of Charleston; brother Thomas Wayne McClung (Sandra) of Hico; sister, Cheryl Faye Teter of Elkins. She was the grandmother to seven grandchildren, Alisha Rae Wilson, Christina Sue Bird, Nicole Lee Sergent, Stephaen Wesley Dackiewicz, Indya Solveig Barney, and Kenneth James Bird; great-grandmother to five great-grandchildren.

Cora Sue was dedicated and baptized member of the Ansted, Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses since 1975. Her life was centered around her love for her God, Jehovah, love of her family and friends, and sharing her hope for the future with others. As a student of the Bible, Cora Sue knew that, because Jehovah “is a god, not of the dead, but of the living,” he looks forward with longing to the time he purposes to bring back to life those who are in his memory and to see them live on earth again, because “they are all living to him” (Luke 20:38, Job 14:14,15).

Cora Sue loved the things of the earth, and she and Kenneth would often spontaneously hop in the car and take a drive to the mountains to enjoy the beauty of nature, purchasing what they would need along the way. She had an unmistakable green thumb and all her plants thrived under her care. We look forward to the time when she will be able to take part in God’s promise to make the earth a paradise once again and see the boundaries of her tiny paradise in Jodie extend over the whole earth.

She was beautiful, kind, and generous, and she will be missed more than words can say. But, if she could, she would tell us not to mourn inconsolably, as this is only a temporary separation. Until that time, we will miss her, but we will not despair, convinced that we will see her again because “neither death nor life” can separate us from God’s Love. (Romans 8:38,39).

Service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Minister Joe Pritt officiating. Burial will follow in the Rich Creek Cemetery, Jodie.
