Mark Plumley Obituary

Mark Alan Plumley, aged 64, passed away in bed on January 3, 2024, in his home in Fayette County, West Virginia.

He was born on August 23, 1959, to his parents, Violet and Boomer Plumley. Mark was an adventurous and loving father to sons, Aaron and Justin, and daughters, Amanda Yarrow, Laura Slatten, Cari Slatten, Mary Sandoval and Evie Plumley. He was also a proud grandfather to his grandchildren, Skylar, August, Boomer, Casey, Lilah, Morgan, and twins Alan & Thomas.

Mark had a love for nature and spent much of his time on bike trails, fields, or in forests. He was an avid outdoorsman, hiker, and camper and enjoyed taking his family on trips to explore the mountains, trails, rivers, and wonders all around us. Mark also had a long-held commitment to studies of martial arts under several sensei, practicing techniques for meditation and defense. He was a devout Christian throughout his life and had a strong, evolving, and active relationship with God. He had been a member of several churches over his years, most recently a parishioner of Bell Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Dixie, WV.

The son of a mason, he was tall, strong, and held his beliefs as rigid as any stone, yet with friends he was warm, curious, and loved to laugh.  His mother instilled the importance of education, proper behavior, and if the stories he told were correct, a healthy fear of a swinging broom.

Mark will be remembered for his efforts to protect nature, perpetually aiming to leave trails better than when he found them, a lifelong curiosity fueling his love of science, his unwavering faith, and his perhaps stubborn sense of knowing what was right. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by those who knew him well.

Through his children, his passion for the outdoors, love for science, wonder of the universe, desire to help those less fortunate, and commitment to personal beliefs live on.  Along with his children and grandchildren, he leaves behind his siblings Sue, Ron, and Barbara, brothers-in-law David and Duffy, daughters-in-law Courtney and Elizabeth, son-in-law Jaime, and many important nieces and nephews and cousins.

Preceding Mark in heaven are his mother and father, Violet and Boomer, sisters Debra Ann and Judy, and Judy’s husband Fred.
