William Claudious Markle, Jr., 84, of Maysel, son of the late William C. and Icy Markle, passed away peacefully after a long illness on March 8, 2007.
He was cared for by his loving wife of 59 years, Dora Happney Markle. Her dedication to his care allowed him to remain at home and extended his life with dignity and love as he slowly succumbed to vascular dementia. An indication of a good marriage must be this dedication, still talking, caring, and loving the company of one another.
Born on January 22, 1923, Bill lived a happy and contented life; he loved and provided for his family. His love for his wife, three children, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren was unconditional. He served his country in WWII (Army) and after in the Marines. He was employed in several types of businesses. In 1974, he and Dora moved from California to Maysel to open a small grocery store, Markle's Market. It was here he was the happiest. He could once again walk the hills, fish the streams of his boyhood, plus he was surrounded by an extended family and old friends. He cherished the calm and peacefulness of West Virginia.
As our Dad he taught us to value each person as an individual, seek the most out of life, and have dreams. His daily routine of reading the newspaper and watching the news would drive us crazy as children but as adults we now enjoy the same habit. His love of history; his favorite being US history; would at time require us to track down our school history books in order for us to do our homework. His knowledge of our country's history was amazing; one of the saddest parts of his illness was watching this knowledge just disappear, him reading his books again to try and regain the knowledge. We will carry him in our hearts forever and rejoice in his first 80 years before his illness struck and remember the good moments of his illness, his sense of humor never leaving him or the twinkle in his eye.
William (Bill or Claudie to his friends and family), was preceded in death by his only son, Dale Eugene Markle; his brother, Floyd and sister, Jane Lanham; half-brothers, Hayward, Gene, and Norvil. He is survived by his wife, Dora Markle, sister, Susan Wolfe of Ripley, daughter, Janet Koch and son-in-law, Randy of Looneyville; granddaughters, Charlotte Cleaves and her family of Burleson, TX; Christina Gibson of Ivydale and her family; Charlene Koch and her daughter, Sierra; daughter, Joyce Izat and son-in-law, Alastair of Newton; grandson, Scott Izat of Miami, FL; granddaughter, Samantha Izat (Morgantown). Bill is also survived by his wonderful sister/brothers-in-law and their families; Bobbie Jean Davis (Charleston), Eula Happney (Maysel), Irene Davis (Parkersburg), R. Kellis Happney (Clinton, TN), Mark Happney (Ravenswood) Maxine Lane (Fola).
Graveside service will be 1 pm Monday, March 12, 2007, at the Blue Knob Church Cemetery, the church he attended as a young man and one his own grandfather, Daniel Markle, had helped to build. At the bottom of Blue Knob is the site of his family homeplace where he was born and raised. His soul will go, he firmly believed in the Bible, but his body will always be home.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 pm Sunday at Carl Wilson Funeral Home, Clay.
