Grandison Templin Licklider, 93, of Charlton Heights, WV, passed away quietly at home on August 12, 2010, surrounded by loving members of his family. His death was the result of complications of Alzheimer's.
Grandison " George" was born in Shepherdstown, WV, on February 13, 1917. He was the only son of Julia (Maddox) and Edmond Lee Licklider.
He graduated from Morgantown High School and then entered West Virginia University where he earned a master's degree in Chemistry. During his studies he had the distinction of being inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Fraternity.
Grandison graduated from West Virginia University in 1940 and then began his 40 year career as a chemist with Union Carbide Corporation at Alloy, WV. His career was interrupted for three years in which he honorably served his country during World War II.
During his military service in the Army Air Corp, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant while serving as a Meteorologist Officer in the 21st Weather Squadron. His meteorological training was obtained at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
During his military service, he traveled throughout Europe and provided vital weather information for the planning of military campaigns.
Upon his return from military duty, Grandison met his wife of 62 years, Evelyn Faye Hiser. She was his best friend and during the last stages of illness was not only his constant companion but also his loving caregiver. The couple settled in Charlton Heights where they had four daughters - Marilyn Faye Hitt (Dr. John -deceased), Suann Carelli (Harry), Betsy Ellen Grzyb, and Virginia Templin Vance. Grandison is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Teresa Chapman, Eric Hitt and Todd Hitt, Benjamin, Charles Templin and Cameron Bradley Keenan, Steve Grzyb, and Justin Templin Licklider.
He is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren.
During his life, Grandison was an avid reader, and enjoyed golf, tennis and working in his garden.
Funeral service will be 1 pm Monday, August 16, 2010, at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Rev. James Dempsey officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor, with graveside military rites conducted by the Ansted VFW Post.
A private family viewing will take place at 11 am. Friends may call from 12 noon till 1 pm.
